Changes in education

Education is going through changes towards competence-oriented education. The role of the teacher, the place of classical lessons and the responsibility of the students are changing.

What are competences?

• A competence is a combination of knowledge, skills, attitude and personal characteristics which are used by a person to function towards the demand in a specific context. (Erasmus OECR en M. van Dijken van Reekx).
• Competence is literally translated into capability of ability (van der Herik en Winkler in 'Kern competences MBO)
• Competence description in the science of education is realted to thecollection of the right knowledge, skills, behaviour or attitude (Mulder en Pals in 'Competence-oriented educating and development).

MemoTrainer method within the competence-oriented education

In the past, a teacher had the responsibility to teach new knowledge. Within the competence-oriented education, the teacher's role changed to the role of supporting and coaching and is more oriented to teaching skills and attitude. The responsibility of gaining knowledge is only of the student.

By putting the knowledge component outside the contractual time, there is an opportunity for teachers to bring his role as a coach into practice. Teachers' contractual time is now more focussed on building up skills and coaching students.
